Nottingham law firm Nelsons has promoted accountant Kirsty Tompkin to partner and director of finance.
Tompkin has been with Nelsons for the past 17 years, joining in 2004 as senior finance assistant after studying management accounting at university, and has since progressed through the firm.
The law firm, which also has offices in Derby and Leicester, was an early adopter of an alternative business structure, which means that employees who aren’t solicitors – like Tompkin – can reach partner status when they otherwise would not have been able to.
She said: “I joined Nelsons while studying towards my Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) qualification. Nelsons offered an opportunity for me to develop in a supportive environment as I studied and I have since worked my way up through the ranks to now reach partner status.
“It also brings me a great deal of satisfaction to see the impact that the finance department’s work has, from working with clients through to helping to inform Nelsons’ board.”
She added: “Nelsons is, and always has been, a very forward thinking firm and its alternative business structure is proof of this. It’s a fantastic opportunity to become not just a director, but a partner as well.
“I’m looking forward to playing a more active part in helping Nelsons achieve its business objectives while also focusing on my own priorities, to develop a high-performance culture and drive the efficiency and effectiveness of my department so that we can continue empowering our clients.”
Nelsons chief executive Stewart Vandermark said: “Kirsty has proven herself to be an asset to the firm since she joined us 17 years ago and is thoroughly deserving of this promotion. I’d like to congratulate Kirsty on her promotion and look forward to seeing her continue to drive the department forward in her new role.”
